How did the Romans divide
the day?

The day and night was each divided into twelve hours. Of course, that meant in the summer, hours lasted longer than in the winter.

Each hour was divided into smaller parts, known as the first small part (pars minuta prima), or minute.

Each minute was divided into smaller parts, known as the second small part (pars minuta secunda) or second.
